Abstract:
      Microplastics in soil can combine with heavy metals and result in complex pollution, which can alter the environmental behavior and toxic effects of single contaminants and consequently negatively affect the soil ecosystems. However, the combined toxicity of microplastics and heavy metals and their formation principles and processes have not yet been fully elucidated. This paper presents a detailed review of the combined environmental behavior of microplastics and heavy metals in soil environment, describes the principles and processes of adsorption and desorption of heavy metals by microplastics, and characterizes the migration and transformation of microplastics and heavy metals in soil. Furthermore, it summarizes the latest research progress on the combined toxic effects of microplastics and heavy metals, and finally, it presents an outlook for future studies, to provide a reference for the combined toxicity studies of microplastics and heavy metals.
