As an important alternative to conventional plastics, biodegradable plastics have been progressively adopted for applications such as food packaging materials and agricultural mulch films due to their environmentally friendly properties. In recent years, the environmental pollution risks posed by discarded biodegradable plastic products have garnered widespread attention. However, systematic investigations into their carbon metabolism behavior and microplastic pollution across different receiving environments remain scarce. This review summarizes recent advances in assimilation and mineralization mechanisms within the carbon metabolism of biodegradable plastics, compares differences in their carbon metabolism across various receiving environments, and analyzes the latest detection technologies for degradable micro - and nano-plastics. Future research faces key challenges including quantitative analysis of cross-medium carbon metabolism throughout the entire life cycle of biodegradable plastics and high-throughput detection of biodegradable microplastics.
