| The pollution control of rural rivers often faces challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, significant fluctuations in pollution loads, and pronounced spatio-temporal variability of pollutants. The biofilm method, recognized for its cost-effectiveness, high efficiency, and environmental friendliness, offers a viable technical approach for water purification and ecological restoration in rural river systems. This paper systematically examined the purification mechanisms of biofilm processes and provided a focused review of three types of biofilm technologies(fixed carrier, suspended carrier, and ecologically composite systems)suitable for rehabilitating rural rivers under varying water qualities, flow regimes, and treatment demands. Additionally, it discussed integrated strategies for managing non-point source pollution as well as combined point and non-point source pollution. Furthermore, considering limitations related to the long-term performance of biofilm carriers, process selection, and cost evaluation, the study proposed intelligent process pathways for future applications. |
