Agricultural green development is a key pathway for achieving sustainable economic, social, and environmental progress. Based on data from the 2020 China Land Economic Survey (CLES) and using Jiangsu Province as a case study, this paper employs the epsilon-based measure (EBM) model with undesired outputs to assess the green production efficiency of rural households. It further uses econometric models to empirically analyze the impact of non-agricultural employment on agricultural green production efficiency and its underlying mechanisms. The findings indicate: Non-agricultural employment significantly inhibits agricultural green production efficiency, an effect that remains consistent after robustness tests. Human capital of agricultural labor and household land operation scale are important mediating variables, accounting for 32.99% of the total effect, with the land scale effect being more pronounced. Agricultural mechanization development significantly mitigates the negative impact of non-agricultural employment on green production efficiency, providing technological support for agricultural green transformation. Based on these findings, the paper recommends optimizing the allocation of agricultural labor and human capital, adjusting land operation scale, promoting agricultural mechanization, improving the market system for green products, and strengthening policy support and incentive mechanisms to foster high-quality agricultural green development.
